Before we get to personal development training, let’s first have a look to understand what personal development is. I’ve written on my blog what personal development is, which I explain as the activities an individual undertakes to improve various aspects of their lives. It involves activities around the areas of identity, self-awareness, improving talents, productivity and working towards their potential to achieve a high quality of living. A person working on personal development are more likely to achieve their goals and even live a fuller life. Even when they don’t achieve their optimal goal in life, the process of constant improvement makes people happier as they are constantly improving themselves to be a better version of themselves than they are each day.
Having known what personal development is, personal development training, therefore, involves using various methods, programs, tools and techniques to improve the various areas of our lives. Why is personal development training important for all and especially for leaders?
To help us develop self-awareness and self-knowledge
As we have mentioned, personal development is about improvement. However, how can we improve something that we don’t understand? Personal development training, therefore, takes individuals through a process of creating self-awareness and self-knowledge so that they gain a good understanding of themselves. Coming from a point of understanding, they, therefore, recognize which areas require improvement and start engaging in personal development. For example, when I was taking the basics of personal development, self-awareness exercises helped me learn that while I was a driven person, I lacked the right dose of persistence and didn’t put as much effort as I should have in my endeavors. With this information, I started working on improving my persistence. I also learned that my talents were not sufficient to get me what I want and I started putting in more effort to achieve my goals.
Personal development training helps you learn new skills
The right kind of personal development training should help you learn some new skills. Since personal development is all about improving yourself, this process of self-improvement may require you to acquire some skills to help you along the way. There are various soft skills that you can learn that can come in handy as you work on self-improvement as an individual and at work. Skills such as emotional intelligence can help you handle your emotions better so that you can interact better with those around you and form healthy personal and professional relationships.
To cope better in life, you constantly have to learn new things. Since not all skills are trained through formal education, you may have to learn them through self-education all of which are part of personal development.
Personal development helps you define better goals
When we are young and have all the energy, we feel as if we can do anything and be anything. It’s good to feel this way, and it’s great to be ambitious. However, with time we learn that sometimes when we spread ourselves across so many activities, we lack a clear goal. This means that we could be having all the motivation and energy and we are not working towards something specific. That we, there is nothing we can achieve.
Personal development helps us narrow down our areas of interest, pick areas we have interest and passion in and focus our energy on achieving these goals. For example, through self-education, I learned from certain books that I may have spent my 20s spread across different areas and my goals were not defined. As a result, I didn’t have much to show for the time I spent on these areas. Although this equipped me with skills and experience, having a clear goal has more rewarding results. This means in my personal development journey, I developed a clear picture of what I want to do and created clear goals on how to get there. Personal development can help you refocus and repurpose.
Personal development training involves developing self-identity
Your identity is an important part of who you are. Without identity, you are likely not to have a stand and easily be swayed and influenced to all the wrong places. Your identity is shaped by your upbringing and your personality. How you were brought up largely contributes to the person you are today. If you had parents who had difficulty in displaying emotions, you might find yourself unable to open up emotionally and this affects your relationships.
Personal development helps you inspect different areas of your identity and develop an authentic identity that’s unique to you alone. Have you ever seen someone who can’t have a stand on any topic? If the friends say they’re moving this way he joins the crowd and if they change course he is there with them? He can’t make a decision without consulting others? Such a person lacks self-identity and it can be detrimental to them as they form superficial relationships. They are untrustworthy since you can’t be too sure which train they will be taking tomorrow. Through personal development, such people can learn their identity, know what they like and they don’t like, and even develop the confidence to stand for what they believe in. Personal development training involves helping individuals take personality tests so they can develop a better understanding of who they are.
Personal development training can help you develop a positive self-concept
Self-concept is the perception you have of yourself. What do you think of yourself? Do you think you are worthy of love? Do you think you are an intelligent person or a not so intelligent one? Do you think you have the ability to achieve your goals? Whatever you think about yourself relating to questions such as above is your self-concept. If you have a poor concept of yourself in a certain area, personal development can help you change this and develop a positive self-concept. If for example, you have little or no faith in your abilities, personal development can help you cultivate skills and attitudes that will help you develop a positive self-concept such that you have more confidence in your abilities. Developing a positive self-concept will help you improve your self-esteem and build self-confidence. You will learn where your strengths lie and gain confidence in them. You will also learn where your weaknesses lie and come up with ways to improve them so that you can feel better about yourself.

For example, if you are an empathic person, you are likely to be drawn to humanitarian careers such as nursing and hospitality. A person that likes to solve problems can find careers in areas such as engineering whereby they can solve problems to structural situations.
If you are working on your career advancement, personal development in areas such as productivity can help you become better at goal setting and working towards achieving these goals. Personal development in self-concept can help you gain more confidence in your abilities and as a result, chase that promotion or appointment you have been eyeing in your career. It’s also through personal development that you can learn on areas that you need to improve and seek out how you can train and improve these skills so that you become more suitable for the career that you want.
Personal development can help enhance the quality of your life
